MCA is excited to be holding the 2016 Washington State Conference at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia, WA.  The conference will be focused on building on skill sets as we provide a 4 hour training on Verbal De-Escalation and an 8 hour training on Trauma Exposure Response and Resliency Building.  Be sure to check out the Speaker section and Schedule tab to learn about all the great things happening!

Keynote: Sandy Mullins, Senior Policy Advisor, Office of Govenor

Sandy Mullins is Washington State Governor Jay Inslee’s Senior Policy Advisor on Public Safety and Government Operations. She has previously served as the Director of the Office of Executive Policy at the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) and the Executive Director of the Washington State Sentencing Guidelines Commission (SGC). At both DOC and SGC, Sandy worked on advancing evidence and research based models in community corrections, most notably in developing the legislation that applied the HOPE model (swift and certain) statewide in violation response. Prior to coming to Washington, she lived in Colorado where she was the Executive Director of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar. She has consulted for non-profit agencies on policy development in a variety of issue areas to include drug and immigration policy. Sandy is a graduate of the University of Colorado-Boulder and the University of Colorado School of Law.

Session 1: Human Trafficking, Washington Engage (non-profit organization addressing human trafficking in WA State)

Ruth Hill, Education Director of WA Engage - Ruth has been combating human trafficking since 2007. She launched Washington Engage’s community coalition initiative in 2013 and is currently focusing on protecting youth from sex trafficking. In addition to degrees in Psychology and Education, she holds a Masters in Social Justice from Loyola University Chicago. Ruth currently serves as Education Director, overseeing the Youth Education Program.

 

Jeri Moomaw, Program Developer and Trafficking Survivor - Jeri is a program developer and a trafficking survivor. She has dedicated her life and work to fighting human trafficking. She has been working in schools and corrections with high-risk youth and adults since 2006. Jeri is a keynote speaker, sharing not only her powerful story but a message of hope and redemption. She has worked as a consultant for courts, law enforcement, corrections and state, city and county government agencies. Her mission is to help others make better choices for their future and not be trapped into trafficking. Jeri attended Boise State University and has an AA Degree in Social Work.

Monday Workshop: Verbal De-Escalation Training - Renee Balodis-Cox, Edgework Crisis Intervention

Renee, director of Behavioral Health and Crisis Consulting PLLC, became fully certified in Edgework methodology in 1997. She is currently one of two lead trainers of Edgework methodology for law enforcement at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. She brings vast professional experience to her work. Renee is a seasoned case manager and therapist, working with some of Seattle’s most difficult clients, not only in an office setting, but also in their own homes and on the street. Renee’s extensive training in psychology and behavioral medicine gives her a unique insight into the nature of hostile and aggressive behaviors. She earned her MA in Community Counseling from City University in 1997, and her MS in Behavioral medicine from the Behavioral Psychology Institute in 1999. Renee is a licensed mental health counselor and child mental health specialist, and also has specialized training in PTSD and anxiety issues. Renee is a dynamic and quick-witted speaker who presents concepts in a thorough yet easy-to-understand manner. Her empathetic, flexible style makes her effective in communicating with a wide range of people, and her background in amateur theater helps make her trainings dramatic, humorous, and affecting.

All Day Tuesday Workshop: Trauma Exposure Response and Resiliency-Building Workshop - Lauren Glickman, Forway Counseling

Lauren Glickman founded FORAY Consulting & Associates in 2007 out of a commitment to work with those dedicated to inspired missions.  Her specialty is addressing issues of trauma exposure response, self-management in the face of high-stakes, high-urgency, and high-intensity situations.  Lauren helps individuals and groups build resiliency and develop sustainable methods of self-care so that dedicated people can thrive over the long term. With over 20 years of experience as a trainer, facilitator, and director, she is committed to helping individuals, teams, and organizations develop the skills needed to have difficult conversations with excellence, manage change effectively, enhance interpersonal relationships and build capacity to learn from experience. 

Lauren brings practical experience, knowledge and training to her work.   She has served as a volunteer, program manager, executive director, and board member on many organizations. Lauren has a M.A. in Applied Behavioral Sciences with a focus on leadership development, training, facilitation, coaching, and conflict management in organizations. 

Driver License Restoration - Northwest Justice Project

Karen Campbell, Senior Managing Attorney for the Vancouver office of Northwest Justice Project - NJP is a legal aid provider in Washington State. Ms. Campbell manages four attorneys who are responsible for representing indigent clients in civil matters in a three county area. Her current practice involves representation of low-income clients in re-entry, housing, consumer, administrative, and driver’s license reinstatement cases. Ms. Campbell co-chairs NJP’s in-house driver’s license reinstatement task force as part of NJP’s strategic advocacy focus of removing barriers to employment. She has been actively involved with stakeholders regarding the development of a statewide relicensing program. Ms. Campbell previously served as a public defender for 15 years in Pierce County Washington and as Session Counsel for the Washington State Senate Services Committee in 2010.

Leslie Owen, Senior Managing Attorney for the Olympia office of Northwest Justice Project - Ms. Owen manages three attorneys in a three county area. Her current practice involves representation of low-income clients in housing, consumer and driver’s license reinstatement cases. She has been actively involved with stakeholders regarding the development of a statewide relicensing program. Ms. Owen previously worked for Columbia Legal Services and served as the Regional Director of the Olympia office for almost four years. Previous to her legal career, Ms. Owen was the Director of Legal Voice, formally the Northwest Women’s Law Center, and the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs. Ms. Owen has also served as a volunteer mediator with the Olympia Dispute Resolution Center, board member and President of the Thurston County Volunteer Legal Services, and Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee for Safeplace, the domestic violence and sexual assault program in Thurston County.

Partnering for Successful Reentry (P4SR) - Rich Coleman,Terry Weber, & Steve Perry

 

Rich Coleman, Policy Training Program Coordinator with the Washington State Employment Security Department/Unemployment Insurance (UI) Policy & Administration Unit - Mr. Coleman has worked in the institutional community as well as in community corrections. He has had successful employment as a Counselor/Correctional Officer with a co-ed state run Work Release facility and has worked as a community Job Developer for clients with criminal history. Mr. Coleman has been trained by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) as an Offender Workforce Development Specialist, and has successfully been involved in consulting work with NIC, as a facilitator/trainer for the highly successful NIC Offender Workforce Development Specialist training curriculum. Mr. Coleman has implemented competency-based curricula and specializes in training to include pre-employment/job readiness and Re-Entry program development.

 

Terry Weber, South Seattle College & WA State Employment Security - For over 24 years, Terry has provided direct services and designed, implemented, supervised, and managed multiple pre-employment, employment and retention, educational and transition programs, as well as administering contracts for programs that target people with convictions to become positive and productive citizens and community members. Terry is a tireless Corrections, communities, and legislative advocate to raise awareness, educate, and build bridges to stop the disenfranchisement of a growing cross-section of the population. He has multiple certifications and has been recognized by Pierce College, the Employment Security Department, the Department of Corrections and multiple communities and organizations across the state for his work with the target population. Terry currently divides his working hours between South Seattle College and Employment Security.

Steve Perry, Manager, WorkSource Thurston - Steve has more than 14 years of experience in workforce development, including more than nine years managing county, state and federal contracts and budgets. Steve has a Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma from the UW Tacoma, and a Bachelor of Arts from The Evergreen State College where he studied public administration, organizational development, and public sector change management. Before becoming a manager of WorkSource Thurston, Steve worked as a business service specialist, and a case manager serving youth, low-income adults and people on public assistance, people with apparent and non-apparent disabilities, and people with criminal history. Steve’s experience serving people with criminal history included people in county and state work release programs, as well as people who were no longer involved with the criminal justice system. Steve also provided hundreds of hours of training to frontline WorkSource staff on working with people who have a criminal history.
